Solar panels and batteries are often mentioned together, but they do different jobs. Knowing the difference makes it easier to decide what you actually need.
What solar panels do
Panels turn sunlight into electricity while the sun is up. That energy can power your home or business in real time. Depending on local rules, extra energy may be exported to the grid.
What batteries do
A battery stores some of the energy your system produces so you can use it later, such as in the evening. Some systems can also provide backup power during an outage, but only when designed and configured for it.
Do you need both?
Not always. A battery may be worth considering if you use a lot of energy at night, want backup capability, or have rates that change during the day. If none of these apply, panels alone may meet your goals.

Backup power expectations
Utility rate structure
Inverter compatibility
Budget and future plans
If you are unsure, plan your solar system so a battery can be added later. Compatibility is easier to manage at the design stage.
